Ebook About
In the fourth novel in Anne Bishop’s New York Times bestselling series, the Others will need to decide how much humanity they’re willing to tolerate—both within themselves and their community...   Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the dynamic between humans and Others has changed. Some, such as Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn see the closer companionship as beneficial.   But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to safeguard what is theirs...

Book Marked In Flesh (A Novel of the Others Book 4) Review :

Things have been building up to a crisis point between the Humans First and Last movement led by Nicholas Scratch and the allied group of Terre Ingene (the Others) and other human groups. The HFL movement crosses the line into war by their overt hostile and murderous actions. The only thing is, they utterly misunderstood whom they were messing with and discovered there were old and very powerful beings living in the wild places who are now ready to unleash their fury. They may not even spare any humans from extinction let alone the lesser others like the shifters and vampires living in the Courtyards. I was all in as things hit the boiling point.Marked in Flesh is book four of The Others series and this unique Urban Fantasy series works best taken in order as its one story progression through the books. In the last book, I noticed that we were starting to get more narrators added as the series world is opening up wider and wider to encompass places outside the Courtyard and outside Lakeside. The cast of characters has grown to include more Others, humans friendly to Others, and of course the villainous humans, too. It might have gotten over-extended or bogged down the plot with too much, but it really didn't. The focus shifts from group to group showing different facets of what is happening, but the plot never stopped advancing.Meg, the first Cassandra Sangue to break free, is busy honing ways for the blood prophets to live out in the world, provide better help with their prophecies, and keep their blood-letting to a minimum. So much is riding on her and she starts to crack as she feels she isn't doing as good a job and might be putting her new makeshift family and 'pack' in danger if she doesn't get her prophecies perfect and understandable.Simon Wolfgard is also feeling the pressure of being the Other who is leading the way in forging an alliance with the humans like no Other has ever done in the past. The connections he has made might very well be what endangers all those living at the Courtyard and in similar courtyard and outposts or it might be exactly what saves some humans from extinction. He worries that he might become too human for himself and for Meg. He has drawn her closer toward considering him as a mating possibility because he is her friend, but it is his very wolf nature that makes their more than friends situation possible. Meanwhile, he works with the rest of his Other friends and some of the human police pack to keep their people safe from the HFL movement actions and they are all preparing for the wild country elders and elementals to exact revenge when the HFL declares war with their deadly, brutal actions.Jackson Wolfgard, Hope Wolfsong, Joe Wolfgard, and Vlad Sanguinati all share most of the main narration with Meg and Simon. There are a handful more new narration voices. I really enjoy all of them and getting their views. This was war and it got brutal. I shed tears at one point because war brings losses and good people were lost under the HFL's greedy power grab. The retaliation actually made me want to cheer because of the pain and destruction and hardship the HFL villain's caused.I loved the gentle and happy epilogue chapter with Meg and Simon when they draw a baby step closer after all the turmoil that came before it. It will be interesting to see what the aftermath will be and I didn't miss that there was no confirmation on one large loose thread so I look foward to seeing what comes next in the next series installment. The Others series is an interesting blend of genres though it mostly falls in the Urban Fantasy camp. The author excels at building a world that is vastly different, but is also quite familiar along with her sensational character and slow-build plot developments. I can heartily recommend this whole series.
There is just something about this series that really grabs me. I’m not sure if it is the concept or the fact that it isn’t afraid to make most of the human population the bad guys. I think that it is a little refreshing to take a look at the world through the eyes of something other than just the human race. While I could see why some might think that it is a little preachy on the green front I never really felt that way and love the characters and the way they tend to look at the world as not just a place to make something because you can but because you should for the betterment of all.**** There is no wasted, empty land in Thaisia. Every place on this continent is full of residents who need what the land already provides. Even the deserts have residents who live on what is available in those places. Even the coldest, remotest areas are not empty of life. When Mr. Scratch talks about the needs of other species, he is really talking about one species, the human species. He and his followers care for nothing else, which is why the terra indigene must care about all the rest. —Elliot Wolfgard, when asked to respond to Nicholas Scratch’s speech ***I’m in love with Meg and Simon really and even though there is so much more to the plot going on I adore the relationship those two share. Both are trailblazers in their own ways and as they learn each other they learn more about what it can mean to be human and to be an Other. The best part of this series continues to be how different the Others are from shifters in other UF series. They see the world different, they are animals and should never ever be confused with humans. Even the ones who can look like humans sometimes.*** “Are you afraid of becoming too human?” Meg asked. “Yes.” “Well, you won’t,” she said fiercely, squeezing his fingers. “You’re a Wolf, and even when you’re not a wolfy-looking Wolf, you’re still a Wolf. You’ve said so. Looking human or running a bookstore won’t change that.” ***The best part of this particular book for me was getting some insight into the Elders, the others who live deeper in the forest that never took on Man’s shapes and are bigger, badder and the Teeth and Claws who will deliver justice. It isn’t your normal kind of justice, there is no trial and the actions of a few will decide for the many. Examples will be made and eventually maybe some of the humans will learn and carry the tales on to their kin. This series is getting a little darker than it even started out. Sure there are fun moments but the humans who are a part of the Human First and Last movement are right up there with members of the Nazis Party. There are more deaths and brutal killings happening. The human pack keeps picking up new members but not because of happy situations, the lines have been drawn and more than one city is going to disappear.Overall the story is really quite engaging and I find it hard to put the book down once I start. Tess and her crazy hair is still one of my favorite characters and I would never want to get on her bad side. I still long for a little more movement on the Meg/Simon relationship front. It is going snail crawl slow but it does seem fitting for the story so I’ll let that go. My favorite moment was when some human situation was explained to a wolf adolescent who learned that foreplay didn’t mean there would be four people to play but something altogether different. The only issue I have are some of the repetitions of the previous stories to maybe sure you know what is going on. I don’t really need a refresher since I’m reading these one per week, but even if it was a year between books for me I think some of it is a little excessive. Still overall that didn’t skew my enjoyment of the book too much.A great series if you are looking for something original with a smidge or romance but not much.
