I bought this book because the combination of dog and detective combines two of my favorite genres. I almost quit on the first page because the story is told from the point of view of the dog. Two of my least favorite genres are fantasy and science fiction. But somehow it caught my attention, and I stayed with it. So there is point number one for the genius of the author - to whom I give high marks. In the end, I am now binge reading the entire series.Yes, the dog is remarkably intelligent - probably far more intelligent than the average Border Collie, but he is still a dog. This is explicable in ways only dog lovers will understand. Any flash of genius anyone’s dog has ever shown (we all remember them and trot out the stories with other dog lovers) are rolled into one dog, but he remains a dog. It is hard to explain how the author does it, but he does.There is enough violence so that folks who like that in a detective story will like it. There is not enough to turn me off, although once in a while it comes close. I would knock off half a star for that, but, since I can’t, I will give this (and the entire series) five stars. My wife couldn't wait to read this book. We are huge dog lovers and knowing it was told in the dogs point of view was different. By page 120 she threw the book across the room and cried. She said the dog had been stabbed, run over by a car,been kidnapped and had a choke collar put on and was about to get whipped into submission. The part that made her the most upset was when the dog had an IV in its leg seconds away from euthanasia. This is NOT entertaining at all. She said she will not finish the book.
